Foster Programs
San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) Fostering Program is dedicated to decreasing the City euthanasia rate by providing temporary care for animals that are not ready for adoption. Ultimately, the Foster Program seeks to find permanent homes for animals once deemed adoption-ready by ACS.
Foster Program volunteers can participate in several program areas:
Foster Program: foster animals that are not adoption ready (i.e. too young, injured, need more socialization)
Guardian Angel Program: fosters adoption-ready animals and attends 80% of ACS adoption events.
Transport Program: foster animals chosen for the transport to no-kill shelters in the Northeastern U.S.
ACS is responsible for providing essential materials for foster volunteers including food, litter, crate, bowls, leashes, veterinary care and medicines.
Why Foster: By fostering a homeless animal, you are enabling ACS to have more kennel space to take in more local animals. Bottom line: the more foster volunteers we have, the more lives we can save. Fostering is an integral part of our organization’s mission. By using a devoted foster volunteer network, we can help animals that would otherwise not get a second chance at finding a forever home.
Foster volunteers are also granted volunteer hours for fostering animals. For each day that the animal is fostered, four (4) hours of community services is earned. Individual students and various organization members, for example, may earn volunteer hours through the ACS Foster Program.
Foster Candidates: Foster homes for puppies and kittens are always needed because they have weakened immunities at young ages and until they’re fully vaccinated, they’re more vulnerable to getting sick. We also need foster homes for adult animals that are recuperating from surgery or are too shy to be adoption-ready.
