The District Patrol Section of the San Antonio Park Police is commanded by a Lieutenant and is responsible for patrolling the City’s 243 City Parks (some 14,518+ Acres), 27 Recreation Centers, 20 City Pools, numerous City sports complexes, fields and facilities, as well as other City Parks & Recreation facilities and properties throughout the City of San Antonio. Park Police patrols are split into nine patrol zones or districts throughout the City, North, South, East, West, Central, Northeast, Brackenridge, Woodlawn, and Hemisfair Park. San Antonio Park Police Officers are Police Officers for the City of San Antonio and while our primary responsibility is the parks, San Antonio Park Police Officers also respond to San Antonio Police calls as dispatched and/or requested by the San Antonio Police Department. Park Police Officers routinely backup San Antonio Police Officers, as well as other Law Enforcement Officers on calls throughout the city.
The District Patrol Section consists of two ten hour patrol shifts seven days a week. The day shift runs from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and an evening shift that runs from 5:00 pm to 3:00 am. The San Antonio Police Department responds to calls for service in the parks between 3:00 am and 7:00 am. Park Police Officers patrol the parks in patrol cars, trucks, SUVs, on bicycles, on ATV’s, and on foot.
In addition to the two District Patrol shifts our C.O.R.E. (Public/Community Relations) unit, Covert Operations (undercover investigation) unit, and our Bike / ATV Patrol units also fall under the District Patrol Section. Although these specialized units operate independently of the patrol units within the agency, the work they do serves to increase the proficiency of our patrol force and our law enforcement efforts throughout the City.
