River Walk Master Plan

The River Walk Capital Improvements Master Plan was developed to identify and prioritize the infrastructure needs for the historic river bend along the River Walk. The plan identified a list of capital improvements with an estimated total cost of $15 million to be constructed over a 5 year period. Improvements identified in the Master Plan include sidewalks, stairs, lighting upgrades, walkway retaining walls, ADA improvements and a number of aesthetic improvements.
The Master Plan was truly a collaborative effort between the City of San Antonio, project architect Beaty Palmer Architects, and downtown stakeholders. The master plan design establishes a new baseline for the River Walk’s physical condition and quality, creates an on-going assessment/maintenance program, and establishes a framework for change to accommodate new developments adjoining or interacting with the River Walk.
The plan was finalized in August 2008. Implementation of the plan is on-going, utilizing a phased approach. Phase I construction will be completed in April 2010, and concentrates on "hot spots" where repairs related to life safety and accessibility are most needed. Phase II is scheduled to begin in late Spring 2010. Planning for future phases is on-going.

The River Walk Capital Improvements Master Plan and its implementation underscores the City of San Antonio’s on-going commitment to making our downtown a better place.
