Healthy School Meals Workshop

In an effort to help improve school meals in San Antonio schools, the Health Department’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work team held a Healthy School Meals Workshop on January 21, 2011 at the Region 20 Education Service Center from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This workshop was facilitated by national experts including Dianne Harris, the CDC lead for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools campaign and other national and regional speakers including the Texas Department of Agriculture, and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Thirteen of Bexar County’s 15 school districts attended the workshop with 93 San Antonio schools agreeing to receive a free salad bar to promote healthy food options. Schools’ participation will impact over 96,000 students in the Alamo City. All 15 school districts will continue to receive additional information and resources on improving school meals on their campuses.
