Meningitis partnership with UTSA

meningitis
Meningitis survivor, Jamie Shaunbaum and Dr. Thomas Schlenker participated in a press conference to remind college students to get vaccinated.

New state legislation taking effect in January seeks to reduce the risk of meningitis infections among college students. The new law requires all students under 30 years old to be vaccinated before the beginning of the Spring semester.

Metro Health, in partnership with The Texas Immunization Program and UTSA, will host a press conference on November 30 to address the changes in meningitis immunization law and provide students an opportunity to be immunized in the convenience of their own campus. UTSA student health services department will set up a temporary shot clinic near the press conference.

The timing of this Texas law coincides with a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that found college-age individuals ages 17 to 21 have an exceptionally high rate of meningitis, which is twice as high of the rate of the overall population.
