Preservation Code

The Office of Historic Preservation and the Historic and Design Review Commission are required to make recommendations based on the Unified Development Code (UDC) and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.

The UDC has been made in accordance with a comprehensive plan for the purpose of promoting health, safety, morals, and the general welfare of the community. It is intended to consolidate in one (1) place and in logical order without unnecessary duplication all of the regulations pertaining to land use and development. It is designed to make it possible for all of those concerned with land use and development to have access to all city legislation with respect thereto in one (1) convenient chapter which is capable of being published and distributed as a separate and comprehensive segment of the City Code as a whole. Article VI of the UDC provides standards for the alteration, restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures, properties within historic districts, the modification of archaeological sites, and development activities on city-owned property and within public rights-of-way.

    

On June 24, 2010, City Council unanimously approved amendments to Chapter 35 of the Municipal Code (Unified Development Code) in order to implement the City's Strategic Historic Preservation Plan (SHPP).  Signage amendments were also approved on November 18, 2010.

The Office of Historic Preservation, at the request of City Council, also assessed the need for amendments to the River Improvement Overlay (RIO) standards adopted in 2002. The OHP assembled the RIO Task Force to work with local business leaders, preservationists, public officials, and other interested parties to prepare recommended amendments to the RIO sections of the Unified Development Code (UDC) for City Council.  The proposed RIO changes were approved by City Council on March 31, 2011.
