San Antonio Green Living Program Final Report

As part of the City of San Antonio’s commitment to sustainability and to serve as a positive role model for its citizens, OEP sponsored a Green Living Program for City employees. The rationale was to help employees develop sustainability practices in their home—an environment with more learning opportunities and therefore a better chance for developing a sustainability ethic—and then transfer what they learned back to the workplace. This document provides an overview of the program.

Safe Passing Ordinance

Also on February 4, the City of San Antonio adopted a Safe Passing Ordinance which sets a requirement of safe passing by motor vehicles for vulnerable road users.  It establishes a duty of due care and the requirement of a motor vehicle operator not to interfere with vulnerable users' legal use of the road.  Safe passing distance is defined as 3' for cars and 6' for commercial or large trucks that only applies when road conditions allow.  Violation of the ordinance is punishable as a Class C misdemeanor and fine not to exceed $200.00. Bike Sharing in Texas

Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program

Casa Verde SA is a weatherization assistance program designed to assist low-income homeowners and renters by installing upgrades that increase the energy efficiency of their houses and reduce utility bills. The program is a partnership between the City of San Antonio's and CPS Energy.

Who Is Eligible? San Antonio households at or below 200 percent of the federally determined poverty level whose homes have adequate structural conditions qualify for Casa Verde SA. Priority is given to the elderly, persons with disabilities, families with young children, households with high energy costs relative to income, and households with high energy consumption.

As of August 26, 2011, the City Lights program will no longer be accepting participants. All participants enrolled on or before August 26, 2011 may still participate and obtain program benefits.

The City Lights program was designed to affect 750 small business with lighting retrofits and to provide at least 1000 energy efficiency audits. To date, the program has exceeded both of these goals and is now fully subscribed.

While the City Lights program will no longer be available, the Citys partner, CPS Energy, has expanded their commercial retrofit rebate program to include all commercial properties. Small businesses are encouraged to visit the CPS Energy website for information related to participation in the commercial lighting rebate program.

The Office of Environmental Policy and CPS Energy are partnering up to encourage tree planting to save on cooling costs. CPS Energy customer who plant trees shade trees for energy savings can get up to three rebates, each amounting to $50, which can save up to $150 on utility bill.
