Lou Hamilton Community Center was first dedicated in 1975 when it was named for former Recreation Superintendent Lou Hamilton, who died earlier that year. Hamilton began with the department as a part-time playground worker at Roosevelt Park in 1930 for a salary of $40 a month when the department's entire budget was $25,000. She worked her way up to superintendent in 1941. She was the first woman to hold the presidency of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF), vice president of the Amateur Softball Association, chairman of the Southwest District Advisory Board of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and she was one of only two women members of the International Joint Rules Committee for Softball.
When she celebrated her 25th year with the City, the City of San Antonio proclaimed Recreation Day in San Antonio in her honor. She has been referred to as "the First Lady of Recreation and Sports in Texas."
Hamilton Community Center received a 1,800 square foot addition dedicated in May 2000. The consulting architect on the project was Beaty Saunders Architects and the contractor was Baron Long Construction.
Other improvements funded with the 1994 Park Bonds project budget of $514,428 included a new entry way, interior renovations, accessibility improvements, a fire hydrant and entry landscaping.
Hamilton Community Center is located in Lady Bird Johnson Park, also home to the Alva Jo Fischer Softball Complex, a YMCA daycare center, swimming pool, and skate park.
