How to Properly Plant Your Trees
- Select the right tree for the right location.
- Keep large species at least 20 ft away from structure and overhead utility lines.
- Call 811 for free public utility locates, also know private buried utilities on your property.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but not deeper.
- Cut or remove girdling roots; plant with root flare visible.
- Backfill halfway with original soil and water in thoroughly.
- Backfill the rest of the original soil and water in thoroughly.
- Mulch with wood chips, 2-3 foot radius, 2 inches deep; but keep 2-3 inches away from trunk.
