The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is offering youth ages 14 and under the opportunity to get head start on the basics of swimming for free while helping to attempt to set a Guinness World Record. The department is joining forces with the nation's top water safety and training organizations to present The World's Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) on Tuesday, June 18, at 10 a.m., at six pools.
The pools are: Dellview, 500 Basswood Dr.; Heritage, 1423 Ellison Dr.; Lady Bird Johnson, 10700 Nacogdoches; Lincoln, 2803 E. Commerce; South Side Lions, 3100 Hiawatha; and Woodlawn, 1100 Cincinnati.
Registration will be held June 11 through June 13 from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 W. Cesar Chavez, and on June 12 and 13, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at all six participating pools. Participants are also welcome to register the day of the event.
On June 18, the Parks and Recreation Department, along with water parks, pools and other aquatic facilities around the globe, will host swimming lessons simultaneously in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record.
The event was created in an effort to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim. Swimming is a life-saving skill and a vital tool to prevent drowning, the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14.
The department provides CPR and lifesaving training to prepare applicants for their lifeguarding responsibilities. Applicants who have passed the test will be scheduled for training classes.
