4 Regional Pools Open in May

swimmer Get a head start on the summer pool season with a visit to one of four regional pools now open. The pools are South Side Lions, Heritage, Woodlawn Lake and Lady Bird Johnson (see list below). They are open from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and from 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturday for open swim. Enjoy lap swim on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Admission is free.

In addition, the four regional pools will be open in celebration of the Memorial Day weekend to include Saturday, May 25, Sunday, May 26 and Monday, May 27, from 1 to 7 p.m.

The regular season runs from June 15 through August 18 at all 24 location. Hours will vary. Regional pools will again be open for the extended season from Aug. 20 through Oct. 26.

World's Largest Swimming Lesson on tap

Swimming lessonThe San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is offering youth ages 14 and under the opportunity to get head start on the basics of swimming for free while helping to attempt to set a Guinness World Record. The department is joining forces with the nation's top water safety and training organizations to present The World's Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) on Tuesday, June 18, at 10 a.m., at six pools.

The pools are: Dellview, 500 Basswood Dr.; Heritage, 1423 Ellison Dr.; Lady Bird Johnson, 10700 Nacogdoches; Lincoln, 2803 E. Commerce; South Side Lions, 3100 Hiawatha; and Woodlawn, 1100 Cincinnati.

Registration is on-going through June 15 at th San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 W. Cesar Chavez, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Participants are also welcome to register the day of the event at one of the six participating pools.

On June 18, the Parks and Recreation Department, along with water parks, pools and other aquatic facilities around the globe, will host swimming lessons simultaneously in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record.

The event was created in an effort to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim. Swimming is a life-saving skill and a vital tool to prevent drowning, the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14.

Available at Lady Bird Johnson, Dellview, Heritage, Joe Ward, New Territories, Woodlawn, Roosevelt and South Side Lions before or after normal operating hours. The number of lifeguards needed is based on the number of guests using the facility.

Lunch Program offered at 8 pools

Lunches will be served free of charge during the summer program from June 18 to Aug. 9 at eight pools. These include Concepcion, Elmendorf, Heritage, Kennedy, Kingsborough, Roosevelt, Woodlawn, and San Pedro. Meals will be served from 1 to 2 p.m., with the exception of San Pedro, were serving will occur from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Snacks will be served from 3 to 4 p.m. at all eight pools. No sign-up is required and meals are available to youngsters 18 and under.

Water aerobics

Water exercise is therapeutic, low impact and is great for your heart. Classes are offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. The cost is $30 for a one-month pass for anyone 15 or older. Offered at Kingsborough, San Pedro, South Side Lions, and Woodlawn Lake pools. Ten participants needed in order to hold classes.

Swim Teams

A competitive swim program is offered at all of our outdoor pools. For a one-time registration fee of $6, each pool will have a team for children and adults. Participants practice every day in order to compete against other pools in four weekend meets. We are members of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) which is a non-profit organization established in 1925 to promote and organize amateur athletics in the state of Texas.

Now hiring: Lifeguards, pool staff

Lifeguards, public service attendants and pool supervisors are now being hired for the 2013 outdoor pool season. Lifeguard applicants must be at least 16 and must pass a swim skills test. The department provides CPR and lifesaving training to prepare hirees for their lifeguarding responsibilities. Applicants who have passed the prerequisite test will be scheduled for training. The starting salary is $9.01 per hour.
