The Wildland/Urban Interface Team responds to one of the newest fire threats: where developed areas meet natural, undeveloped areas, defined as “wildlands.” According to the Texas Forest Service, Wildland/Urban Interface is quickly becoming a major threat for the northwest and north side of San Antonio.
WUIT personnel are certified Basic Structural Firefighters, along with specialized training that includes a tough physical fitness test that meets national standards.
Team members have participated with the National Park Service to support areas such as the Big Thicket, the San Antonio Missions, and the Lyndon B. Johnson and Padre Island National Parks. WUIT assisted the Texas Forest Service with a fuel reduction program in Government Canyon State Park. The team also works locally with the San Antonio City Parks and Recreation Department on fire fuel reduction efforts.
